Item #015: Scarce Virginia Manufactory alteration by A.B. Barrett

Roughly 60,000 muskets were made by the Virginia state-ran arsenal located in Richmond. When hostilities broke out in 1861, Confederate authorities scrambled to convert old flintlocks to the more modern method of a percussion cap ignition system. Richmond firms such as Adams, Union Manufacturing Co., SC Robinson, and A.B. Barrett of Wytheville altered thousands of muskets.

While the total number of muskets altered is unknown, it is believed to be not more than 1,200.

Virginia Manufactory muskets are harder to come by due to attrition from Antebellum and Civil War use. A fine example to add to any Confederate arms collection.
